Useful Information

Part of Trace Aviation’s philosophy of total customer service includes providing our customers with as much information as we can. Below is a list of references and resources created or compiled specifically with King Air operators in mind. We have found much of this information to be invaluable. We hope that you do, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is the King Air landing gear required to be inspected every 6-years or 8,000 cycles?

A: The Beech King Air Maintenance Manuals are designed to comply with FAR 91.409(f)(3) which states that turbopropeller-powered multiengine airplanes must be inspected in accordance with a current inspection program recommended by the manufacturer or other FAA approved inspection program. The landing gear inspection requirements called out for in the King Air Maintenance Manual are located in Chapter 5, “Special Inspections” which are part of the “Phase” inspection program.

Q: If we exchange our landing gear, what can we expect as far as “charge backs” are concerned?

A: Charge backs are mostly unknown until we inspect your returned core components. In most cases, we can give you a “ballpark” estimate based on our past experience and normal wear items. We can discuss these items with you before you order your exchange components.

Q: What are the most common charge back items?

A: Cylinder bearings are often found to be worn beyond limits. Beech allows only .004” of wear in the bearings. There are two bearings per cylinder, internal and lower, with the lower bearing exhibiting most of the wear. These bearings are made from manganese bronze, half hard temper, fastened inside the steel barrel by silver solder welding. They become egg shaped from landing forces when the extended strut is driven back. Trace Aviation’s in-house process repair can repair the bearings and save the barrel. Also, actuator nuts that fail end play checks, cracked aluminum torque knees, and cracked old-style welded type nose gear forks are commonly found.

Q: If we fly in for landing gear maintenance, can you perform other maintenance such as inspections while the aircraft is in your hangar?

A: Absolutely! We are a repair station for airframe and powerplant maintenance as well as landing gear. We have the people, equipment, and experience to perform virtually all aspects of King Air maintenance.

Q: How long will my aircraft be “down” if all of my 6-year landing gear requirements are due?

A:
• 3 working days if we exchange your gear (your hangar or ours), including R&R and rig*

• 12 working days if you remove your gear and send it to us*

• 10 working days if you fly to us for the inspection / overhaul, including R&R and rig*
*estimated time

Q: How do I get my landing gear components to you for inspection/overhaul?

A: We can either send you a box or you can tie everything to a pallet and build a box around it. For shipping, you can use your freight company or we can supply you with prepaid FedEx Freight shipping documents—check with us on this as we have reasonable rates with FedEx.

Q: If I elect to have you install and rig our landing gear in my hangar, will I get a logbook entry?

A: Yes. We will provide you with a logbook entry signed with our repair station number; even if we work in your hangar.

Q: If I fly to you for maintenance, how am I going to get home or get around?

A: If you want to get home, many airlines including Southwest service the Jackson-Evers International (JAN) airport where we are conveniently located. Rental cars are also locally available.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?

A: Cash, Check, MasterCard, Visa, Wire Transfer

Q: When is payment due?

A: Payment is due when services are rendered.

Q: What paperwork will accompany my landing gear components?

A: You will receive a work order package that includes an original 8130-3, copy of the work order, copy of the wear measurements, copy of the NDI/NDT record, and all applicable airworthiness documentation for each landing gear component we inspect or overhaul.

Q: What about install hardware?

A: We include with each component a package that includes all of the necessary installation hardware so you do not have to worry about re-using questionable hardware. All we ask is that you return all of your old hardware with the core components to avoid expensive charge backs.

Bill Backs

Upon inspection of your core landing gear components, there may be additional charges for discrepancies that are beyond the scope of a normal overhaul. Due to the many variations, dynamics, complexity, age, and history of each landing gear system, until your exchange parts go through our inspection process, we can only estimate as to what you may expect in bill backs.

Failure to return all original hardware with core components can result in bill backs.

“Bill Backs” will occur upon finding missing, corroded, or cracked parts and parts worn beyond allowable limits. (Bushings, standard hardware excluded)

Rather than replace condemned parts with only factory-new, our staff subscribes to online inventory websites to find cost effective replacement parts and pass the savings to you.
